SOME FAVORITE QUOTES ON WRITING These are from two of my favorite books for writers: The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White, and, If You Want to Write, by Brenda Ueland.

"When he delivered his oration on brevity to the class, he (William Strunk) leaned forward over his desk, grasped his coat lapels in his hands, and, in a husky, conspiratorial voice, said, "Rule Thirteen. Omit needless words! Omit needless words! Omit needless words!" --E.B.White, The Elements of Style.

"But the moment I read Van Gogh's letter I knew what art was, and the creative impulse. It is a feeling of love* and enthusiasm for something, and in a direct, simple, passionate and true way, you try to show this beauty in things to others. . ."

"*Or it can be a feeling of hate and abhorrence too. Though the work of the men who have worked from love seems to be greater than those who have worked from hate." --Brenda Ueland, If You Want To Write

And the following, also from Ms. Ueland, cracks me up!  Probably because it feels very familiar to me!: "It is hard to be carefree when you have many anxieties. But the more you have, the more necessary it is to feel carefree for a time, so that you will get some new ideas on how to deal with your anxieties." -Brenda Ueland, If You Want To Write

October newsletter

October 18, 2006

Wow. October crept up on me and is sliding by!
I think I woke up to the fact that the month was speeding by, when, after a spate of lovely warm weather around here, winter rushed in. Yesterday we got about five inches of snow! This morning I was out on the roads early and it was gorgeous. Everything was coated in white, frozen and still. And once again we were reminded why the lyrics of America's unofficial anthem are what they are: the snow-covered mountains were literally purple as the first rays of the sun touched them, and they were indeed majestic. Inspiring!

I can't believe October is more than half over already. It's been a good month, the highlight of which was speaking at the Tattered Cover in Denver on Oct. 12. There were about 45 people there and roughly ten service dogs. It was great fun and all my proceeds from book sales that night will go toward several local service dog groups. Another thing keeping me busy these days is visiting with area bookgroups for their discussions of Around the Next Corner. I've thoroughly enjoyed every group and met many wonderful women. Also inspiring! If your book group has chosen ATNC and you'd like me to visit (locally) or phone in during your discussion to answer questions, etc., I'd be happy to. Just send me an email request with date and time. The more notice, the more likely I can accomodate. Contact me at: readermail@elizabethwrenn.com

Whether it's snowy or warm where you are, I wish you and yours a happy October, and good reading.
Elizabeth
