SOME FAVORITE QUOTES ON WRITING These are from two of my favorite books for writers: The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White, and, If You Want to Write, by Brenda Ueland.

"When he delivered his oration on brevity to the class, he (William Strunk) leaned forward over his desk, grasped his coat lapels in his hands, and, in a husky, conspiratorial voice, said, "Rule Thirteen. Omit needless words! Omit needless words! Omit needless words!" --E.B.White, The Elements of Style.

"But the moment I read Van Gogh's letter I knew what art was, and the creative impulse. It is a feeling of love* and enthusiasm for something, and in a direct, simple, passionate and true way, you try to show this beauty in things to others. . ."

"*Or it can be a feeling of hate and abhorrence too. Though the work of the men who have worked from love seems to be greater than those who have worked from hate." --Brenda Ueland, If You Want To Write

And the following, also from Ms. Ueland, cracks me up!  Probably because it feels very familiar to me!: "It is hard to be carefree when you have many anxieties. But the more you have, the more necessary it is to feel carefree for a time, so that you will get some new ideas on how to deal with your anxieties." -Brenda Ueland, If You Want To Write

"I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories." --Washington Irving, Tales of a Traveller

August Newsletter

16-Aug-2006

Happy August, Readers!
If your summer has been anything like my summer, it's flown by! I hope that yours has been full of good books and good times with friends and family.

I have been busy promoting Around the Next Corner, and I want to take this opportunity to thank you each and all for your support. There has been a recent surge in word-of-mouth sales and I am flattered and thrilled! I have also just begun working with bookstores on scheduling meetings with book groups to discuss ATNC, and the issues raised in the book (parenting, mid-life, marriage, dogs, and so much more!) I've done a couple of these already and they were a lot of fun. If you are a member of a group that has read ATNC together and would like me to visit, please contact me via my website, or my publicist Carolyn Birbiglia at Penguin: Carolyn.Birbiglia@us.penguingroup.com
I will bring chocolate and dog biscuits! :)

I have also been writing my second novel, about friendship between three women. In recent years I have been intrigued by how our friendships ebb and flow over the different stages of our lives, and how important our female friendships become after our kids leave the nest. Maybe you've heard the old adage: There are three major ways to test any relationship- go into business together, travel together or live together. The women in my novel take on all three! And yes, there is a dog!

So it's time for me to get off the computer and give a good friend a call and schedule a date. If you do the same, tell her hello from me!
Take care,
Elizabeth
